Homes of Color
Nikki Giovanni's house is a lot like the sassy poem "My House" she penned in 1972. Collectibles, black memorabilia, artwork, photographs, plaques, awards and books abound. Many images invoke nostalgic feelings.
On a quiet Friday morning, we arrive to take photographs and have a leisurely talk with a woman who is a renowned poet, writer, activist and educator. Currently a Distinguished Professor of English at Virginia Polytechnic University in Blacksburg, Va., Nikki is a black woman who is a mother, a daughter and a powerful literary voice."
